About TEF Canada

TEF Canada is a French test recognised by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). For immigration all four tests are taken: reading and listening comprehension, written and oral expression. For citizenship only listening comprehension and oral expression are needed, taken on the same day.

Reading and listening comprehension are multiple-choice questions, one point for each right answer and nothing taken off for a wrong one. Written and oral expression are marked by certified examiners.

Each test is scored out of 699 and that score is converted to a level of the Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens (NCLC), the French counterpart of the Canadian Language Benchmarks. IRCC looks at the level in each skill, not at a total.

The format in use since 11 December 2023 has 40 questions in each comprehension test, and its own score-to-NCLC table, which differs from the one for earlier tests.
