About TCF Canada

TCF Canada certifies general French for people filing with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for economic immigration or Canadian citizenship. France Éducation international requires all four tests at every sitting: listening, reading, writing and speaking. No knowledge of Canada is tested.

Listening is 39 multiple-choice questions in 35 minutes; each recording is played once and the question comes after it. Reading is 39 multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes. Both use four options and one right answer. Questions get harder through the test. Only right answers count; a wrong or blank answer scores nothing. The number of right answers is then turned into a score from 100 to 699 according to how hard the questions were, so two candidates with the same number of right answers can receive different scores.

Writing is three tasks in 60 minutes: a message of 60 to 120 words, an account of 120 to 150 words, and a comparison of two points of view of 120 to 180 words. Speaking is three tasks in 12 minutes with an examiner, including 2 minutes to prepare the second task. Both are marked out of 20 by trained assessors, in double marking. From the sessions of 1 September 2026, requests to have writing or speaking marked again are suspended for about a year.

Each score is reported as a level of the Cadre européen commun de référence pour les langues (CEFR), from « A1 non atteint » up to C2. Listening and reading use the same point bands; writing and speaking use the same bands out of 20. IRCC reads the result for its own programmes. France Éducation international does not publish an NCLC table on the pages below.
