About JLPT
The JLPT measures Japanese for people whose first language is not Japanese. It has five levels, from N5 (basic) to N1 (advanced); you choose one level to sit.
It is a paper test of multiple-choice questions answered on a mark sheet. There is no writing or speaking test. It is held in Japan and abroad, usually in July and December, though some cities hold it only once a year.
Each level is scored out of 180 and has an overall pass mark and a pass mark for every scoring section. A candidate who reaches the overall mark but misses one sectional mark fails.
From 2026 score reports also show a CEFR level for reference, for candidates who pass. The pass marks themselves have not changed.
