About DELF

The DELF is a French diploma aligned with the first four levels of the Common European Framework (CEFR). Each level is a separate diploma: you may sit B2 without having sat A1, A2 or B1. The diploma does not expire. It is aimed at people who do not hold a diploma from the French public secondary or higher-education system, with the exceptions the candidate manual sets out (including some students abroad who must prove a CEFR level).

Every level has the same four papers, each marked out of 25: listening, reading, writing and speaking. The three collective papers are sat in one room, one after another. Speaking is individual, in front of two examiners. A right answer on the comprehension papers scores its marks; a wrong or blank answer scores nothing. Writing and speaking are marked by examiners.

To receive the diploma you need at least 50 points out of 100, and at least 5 out of 25 on every paper. A mark under 5 on one paper fails the level whatever the total.

The candidate manuals updated in December 2021 say that two paper formats, format 1 and an updated format 2, are in circulation for a few years, and that the centre sets one of them on the day. Times and the 25-point scale do not change; the number of exercises does. This site has full practice tests for DELF B1 and DELF B2 tout public, both in format 2; B2 is the shape most often needed for study and work. A1 and A2 are described below and are not separate practice tests here.
